Character: Miranda Lotte
Series: D.Gray-Man
Version: Chapter 89, just before Chapter 90 where her friends are sucked into the ark.
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual; Miranda doesn’t seem the type to be interested in other women, as she takes more of a sisterly approach to those females she knows.
Appearance: A pale, slender woman of 168 cm (about 5 feet, 5 inches) and 45 kg (roughly 99 lbs.) with curly, dark brown hair that barely brushes past her shoulders, Miranda sports perpetually dark shadows underneath her gray eyes, most likely a sign of her insomniac habits. She still carries two misshapen scars, one on the back of each hand, from when she had her hands nailed to her clock by Rhode.

Before she became an exorcist, her attire was very modest and strict, consisting of a long-sleeved black dress that fell to her ankles and a hairnet that kept her curls out of her face. Interestingly enough, she also wore the key to her clock on a chain around her neck, although it seems she no longer wears it as an exorcist. Her outfit now consists of a black, form-fitting leather-like ensemble with a high-collared jacket, zippered gloves that begin near the upper arm, a belt around the waist sporting a few small pouches, low-heeled boots, and pants that emphasize the shapeliness of her legs. The shirt beneath the jacket appears to be white, but this is speculation, seeing as this outfit hasn’t been seen in full-color yet.

Personality: In all actuality, Miranda is a sweet, caring young woman who only wants to be useful to others. As luck would have it, though, because of her clumsiness and her inability to do things right the first time, she messes up a lot and had to go throughout her life with everyone dubbing her useless. As such, she was easily stressed and would shriek and cry about every little thing, sometimes falling into such a dark depression that she frightened those close to her.

Despite the setbacks of losing jobs and being unable to fix things, Miranda continues to try. Whenever she fails, she wonders why she keeps trying… but then she becomes frustrated and regretful of not trying again, so she starts all over again, determined to do something that will be of use to SOMEONE.

Since her success with the Innocence, Miranda’s confidence has grown and her paranoia has diminished… but not all the way, as evidenced in Chapter 58. Upon restoring the ship to its peak, Miranda notices that everyone is staring at her in shock and amazement—and mistakenly jumps to the conclusion that, as a stranger, she rudely butted in and fixed their ship without having obtained permission from them… and throws herself into the ocean to pay for this heinous sin.

Although she certainly doesn’t look it, the German exorcist possesses a bravery that is rarely ever seen. Even when she knows the odds are against her, even when she knows she won’t offer much of a resistance, Miranda can’t stand not doing anything. This is shown when she runs to Allen’s defense after he saves her, tries to keep Rabi from going after Linali with his wounds (even after he yells at her and hurts her feelings) and shields the crew members in Edo.

Even with increased self-assurance, Miranda still has her doubts. She pushes herself to her limits all too often, because she can’t bear the thought of failing anyone ever again. In the end, her Innocence, while helpful, is also something of a burden… because Miranda knows that time will eventually return and she won’t be able to keep everyone's pain at bay forever. She simply does what she can and holds out for as long as she can, doing her best to protect her friends in her own way.

Abilities/Weaponry: Miranda's Innocence, also known as her anti-akuma weapon, is called Time Record, which was fashioned from the remains of her clock and now pretty much resembles a black disk a little bit larger than your average compact disc. Miranda normally wears it on her right shoulder, but when she uses it, she attaches it to her wrist on the same side. When she activates the Time Record, she can turn back the effects of time on objects and people in a certain radius. However, the effect lasts only as long as she can invoke it, and when she stops, time returns, so those who are wounded will have those injuries returned to them and those who are fatally injured will die.

Oddly enough, Miranda has the ability to go without sleep for up to ten days, which is an asset to her Innocence but a concern to everyone else.

Weaknesses: Put simply and frankly, she isn’t very good at a lot of things. She’s clumsy and paranoid and often fears that the things that she does is bound to offend SOMEONE and sometimes it will build that she’ll try to end her own life to atone. Her luck isn’t the best, and she’s been fired from at least one hundred jobs, although I believe the record now stands at one hundred and six. She’s also not much of a fighter, considering that her Innocence is used mostly for defense, so she’s often vulnerable in battle and useless as an offensive fighter. She’s easily frightened and highly sensitive, and she’s prone to crying.

History: When Miranda Lotte was a little girl, she couldn’t do a single thing right. Every attempt to do something inexplicably failed, and she was always left behind as those around her grew up and become successful. Miranda grew up as well, but things only became worse for her. By the time she was an adult, the town children had already dubbed her the “Unlucky Woman” and had even invented a chant all about her bad luck and her inability to hold a job.

And then Miranda stumbled upon the clock. It was a beautiful item, but the antique owner was throwing it out because no one had been able to get it to work. When he suggested that Miranda try it, she couldn’t help thinking, “A clock that was thrown away because it was useless. It seemed like I was seeing a reflection of myself.” To her immense surprise, when she slipped the key into the slot, the clock chimed. She was readily convinced to buy the clock and took it home, pondering that it was almost as if the clock had approved of her.

After that, unfortunately, things got worse for poor Miranda, and when she had been fired from her 100th job, needless to say… she had something akin to a breakdown and sat slumped against her clock with several bottles of alcohol. In a foolish fit of whimsy, she drunkenly wished that tomorrow would never come… and it didn’t. It remained October Ninth for thirty-four straight days.

On the thirtieth day, Miranda met two exorcists by the names of Allen Walker and Linali Li. They had heard of the mystery of “The Rewinding Town” and had shown up to find the Innocence that was rumored to be causing this phenomenon. Because Miranda was the only one unaffected by time moving backwards, the exorcists (as well as the akuma also searching for the Innocence) figured out that she was somehow the key.

That same night, Linali and Allen discovered that it was Miranda’s clock that was pulling time back and that no one could touch it but Miranda itself. Because of this, it was determined that Miranda was possibly compatible with the Innocence inside the clock and a plan was formed to turn time back to normal: because Miranda had been sorely depressed when she had made the wish, the exorcists decided to boost her mood so that her happiness would reverse the wish… and what better way to cheer her up than to make sure she could get a job and KEEP it?

Five failed jobs later, Miranda and Allen were doing an admirable job at selling tickets to a horror play, but then someone stole the ticket money while Miranda was distracted. As Linali and Allen headed after the pickpocket, Miranda was called “useless” yet again and, in tears, lamented and asked why her clock had to be the Innocence.

Rhode Camelot, a human known as a Noah who served under the Millennium Count, overheard this and promptly snatched Miranda away to an alternate dimension, pinning her to her clock by her hands, via two large spikes. When Allen and Linali came to rescue her, they were both captured by three akuma. Allen was badly injured, while Linali’s nerves had been damaged, rendering her as responsive as a doll.

Rhode tried to kill Miranda with more of the spikes, but Allen got there first and shielded Miranda with his own body, ripping the spikes from her bloodied hands. She fled to safety, but then, upon seeing his pitiful condition, she begged him not to die. Allen, despite his bloodied and heavily injured state, smiled and told her he was all right. At that, Miranda came to a decision and went back, wrapping her arms around him. She tearfully admitted that she didn’t know what she was doing, that she knew she couldn’t do anything, but…

And then the Innocence activated. A bright golden light emanated from the clock and formed into a dome that not only healed Miranda’s wounds, but Allen’s as well. It also restored Linali’s state of responsiveness, rendering both exorcists able to fight and defeat the remaining akuma. Once that fight had ended, Rhode left and the three returned to Miranda’s apartment… only to realize that Miranda was in terrible shape. Her body couldn’t handle the strain of constantly turning back time, but she stubbornly refused to stop her invocation. Allen had thanked her, and she didn’t want that to be useless. She didn’t want it all to be for nothing.

Allen and Linali, however, convinced her that they would be fine, so long as they were still alive, and she finally stopped her Innocence and ran to fetch a doctor as the two exorcists collapsed.

Shortly after that, she left the town to go to her new job: as an exorcist of the Black Order.

Miranda wasn’t seen again until after the exorcists had to leave Allen behind in China as a result of losing his Innocence. She had been called from Headquarters, where she had been improving her synchronization state with the Time Record. She invoked her Innocence and cast it over the entire ship so that everyone within it and the ship itself would always be in a constant state of recovery. She warned everyone that moving too far away from the ship would restore time and that things would return to normal once they arrived in Edo, which meant that if someone received enough injury to be killed… they would die once free from the Time Record.

Of course, several akuma WOULD have to attack and Miranda was only saved thanks to the intervention of several crew members, who cheerfully informed her that they’d already been inflicted with too much damage to survive anyway, so they didn’t mind saving an exorcist.

Because of all of the damages caused, Miranda’s body was under tremendous strain and exertion and tearfully explained to Rabi and Linali that she wouldn’t be able to hold the invocation until they reached Edo. Luckily, an akuma converted by General Cross Marian had arrived and gathered the survivors onto a boat to spirit off to Edo.

As the crew bellowed their good-byes and best wishes, yelling, “PLEASE WIN, SIR EXORCISTS!!” and Anita and Mahoja, the ones who had assisted them in getting the ship, smiled peacefully, Miranda, with tears running down her face, stopped her invocation… and the ship, as well as the people within it, was destroyed.

Upon reaching Edo, the stronghold of the Earl, Miranda cast her invocation again over her companions, collapsing with exhaustion during the battle but still managing to protect the few crew members who had survived.

Once the group had gathered together and had a sweet reunion with a fully-restored Allen, Linali was abruptly sucked into the ground, along with Allen, Rabi, Kanda, Chao Zi, and Crowley. Just as Miranda tried to reach them, she was blinded by a flash of light… and everything changed.
